Sharepoint Error when try to edit documents

If you are getting message Edit document requires Windows SharePoint Services- compatible application and Microsoft IE5.0 or greater.
First you need to check this on your Internet Explorer:
- go to Tools->Manage Add-ons->Enable or Disable Add-ons
- next to Show: click on the drop-down menu and select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer"
- on the list do you see "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class" with the file name being OWSSUPP.DLL
- if it is in Disabled status, select it and change it to Enable.
- also check the status under "Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer"
- restart IE and try to update SharePoint again

If you have more than one add-ons likely they are from previous versions of Office.

This KB article also explains methods of fixing the problem of editing document on sharepoint site in case if you are interested.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714%20
If this article does not solve problem and when you are trying to unregister and register dll you are getting these messages
DllUnregisterServer in owssupp.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005.
DllRegisterServer in owssupp.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070716.

then we need to check to see if there are any leftover directories from previous installs of Office. In the [Drive Letter]:\Program files\Microsoft Office\ directory(10, 11, or 12) directory find whichever one has a copy of owssupp.dll in it. Copy the owssupp.dll file into the directory that doesn’t have one. Now check to see if we can edit files from SharePoint without any trouble.
If it does not work after this and enabling dll then just uninstall Office and delete all of its directories, reboot and reinstall MS Office.

Have a question:

In the add-ons current and previous i don't see "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class"
and nothing that points to the OWSSUPP.DLL file. Does that mean i need to do a complete reinstall?

Yes, you can try doing repair of office in control panel or reinstallation of office if you do not see this dll in program files--microsoft office--office 11 or 12.
After that try removing windows sharepoint services support from Office and readding it back.
